HIDDEN GEM
Freshkills Park
Once the largest landfill on Earth, closed in 2001 and now being slowly transformed into a park nearly three times the size of Central Park, most of it still only accessible on scheduled public tours. It's one of the strangest, most ambitious land reclamation projects in the country, and almost nobody outside Staten Island knows it's happening.
